Kurt Oian is the coach of out junior climbing team. He competed for years is the climbing circuit that he now trains these kids to compete in. He is a wealth of knowledge and is excited as ever to be passing the torch to the next generation of climbers.
As a youth team, membership will be open to all climbers between the ages of 9 and 19. The USCCA sponsors events and tracks points for youth climbers as they compete throughout their geographical region, resulting in a regional ranking and the possibility of being invited to compete in the US Nationals.
As members of the Indoor Ascent Team, we will work together on a regular basis to improve strength and technique, as well climbing smart. Each team member will be assessed on an individual basis, and receive instruction based on their own ability. Progress will be recorded and realistic goals set that will help you to become a better climber. By training as a team, we will learn from each other, motivate and support each other, and most importantly, have fun together.
The bouldering training season is from October 1st - The end of January. The top rope session is from the beginning of Feburary to mid May. The team meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 - 8pm. It is our feeling the in order to improve, team members should also practice two additional times each week. These will not be scheduled sessions; it is the responsibility of each team member to have the discipline to do so. During the weekly meeting, each climber will be given direction as to what they should be working on for that week. Of course, parental support will be key here.
While many team members will also become members of the USCCA it will not be mandatory to do so. Climbers may compete at USCCA events without becoming members. however, only members will have their points tracked with the possibility of qualifying for Nationals. Membership costs $45 for the year; for more information you can visit the USCCA website at www.usaclimbing.org. Parents are encouraged to participate on team nights to help in the team's access. You will probably have to provide transportation to and from the gym, as well as to other host gyms. We also encourage you to get to know the other team parents and car pool as much as possible. Other opportunities to participle include belaying during practice and competitions, fund raising (if we decide as a team that it is necessary), and helping out whenever the need arises. Healthy snacks and drinks are always welcome.
Thank you for your interest in the Indoor Ascent Youth Team. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate ask the Gym staff 603.742.7848.
